Chapter Four: Jason

“Things would be a lot different now if it wasn’t for my broken massage table and you answering my call,” she says when I park the truck in a space in the lot in front of the lumber mill. “Luck, I suppose.”

I don’t know what it is about seeing Olivia sitting comfortably in the passenger seat of my truck, but my truck never looked so sweet. Joy fills her sparkly eyes and all of the sudden, it hits me. I’ll do anything to make her mine.

“Can I help you get out?” I smirk.

“Getting in was tough but I’m certain I can get out all by myself,” she laughs. “Just watch me.”

Tossing my hands up in a playful way, I surrender to her demands and watch. The same adorable stubborn personality she always had, is in full effect right now. She pops the door handle and uses all her strength to push it open. The heavy door swings back and she slides down the seat to the floorboard, then dangles her legs a moment before her final dismount to the ground.

She looks back at me with wide eyes and raises her hands in the air as if she were in the Olympics.

“See, told ya,” she winks just before she closes the door and it melts my heart.

I love this woman.

Joining her outside the truck, I inhale the pleasant scent around us. “Fresh pine today,” I say, feeling pleased.

Olivia looks around in awe as we make our way toward the office inside the mill. We pass rows of logs chopped in every way one could imagine. Short, long, triangle, round, smooth, and rough. All of them give off a delightful scent that pleases our noses. A wide constant smile sits across Olivia’s face and it’s not going anywhere.

Racing ahead of her, I grab hold of the handle on the massive doors and pull it open. She walks in before me and I follow closely behind.

“Good morning, Mr. Toolbert,” one of the workers yells over the sound of the saws.

Giving him a quick wave, I reach into the pile of hardhats and safety goggles by the door. I put my gear on and hand another set to Olivia. She glares down at the gear in my hands and raises a brow.

“It’s required before we can go any further,” I shout over the clanks of the machinery. “For your own safety. You don’t want tree splints to get in your eyes.”

Her curious look tells me she might not have heard the words that came out of my mouth but she takes the gear from my hands anyway. She places the oversized hat over her head and the strap on the goggles is so stretched out that the pair sits around her neck.

Laughing to myself, I motion for her to let me help.

She stands still as I tighten the gear to fit her and when I’m finished, I step back and smile at her. She laughs and knocks on her hat with her fist.
